To Pick a Soup
30 x 24 in | 76.2 x 60.96 cm | Acrylic on Canvas | 2025
Inspired by Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup collection. One day I was curious about why he decided to create his famous soup can collection and I came across an article that explained when he was asked he replied that he ate the soup every day for lunch. It was unclear if he was being sarcastic or not so I thought to myself hmm, I actually did eat this every day for lunch when I would play hooky and spend my Summer breaks at my Grandparent's house. I used to love spending time there because they lived on the edge of town on a ranch and I had total freedom throughout the day. I literally would kick rocks, look for jack rabbits, ride my bike and spend long hours outside just being a kid and finding ways to pass the time. I always reported back to the house at noon sharp because that's what time lunch was served and my Grandma would say to go pick a soup every single day. We would eat together at her kitchen table. The conversations we had during these lunches have stuck with me my entire life. Our conversations over Campbell's Soup is what this series is all about. Some of the sayings are actually from my Grandma and some are from my inner Grandma - my own wisdom that I would share if I were a Grandma.
